The enchanting Rive - Spring Summer 2017

wednesday 15th March 2017

The final step was completed on a cold morning this January. The day after the hills of Conegliano Valdobbiadene application dossier was signed by the Minister of Agriculture, Maurizio Martina, the final formal act before its official presentation to UNESCO World Heritage Committee, the Italian National Commission of UNESCO gave its consent. This approval, which was carried unanimously, launched the final stage of the project: the visit by UNESCO observers to the area next September, and the subsequent decision of the UNESCO Committee in Paris to award the area with the prestigious title of "UNESCO World Heritage Site", which is scheduled for 2018.

The process was launched in 2010, with the inclusion of the area in the "tentative list", and fully supported by the Veneto Regional Council. The draft application of the Prosecco Superiore area was prepared in 2015 after extensive analysis and research had been conducted. This included important steps such as the area’s inclusion in the national registry of Historic rural landscapes, and significant awards such as its election as European City of Wine in 2016.

The formalization of the process, which can be considered to be the last step before recognition, or rather the approval, by the UNESCO Commission chaired by Italian Franco Bernabè, is the result of an effort that has seen all of the historical towns in the Intesa Programmatica d'Area "Terre Alte della Marca Trevigiana" joined together with the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Consortium, the Province and the Chamber of Commerce of Treviso and the Veneto Regional Council, a sign of a territorial identity which is becoming ever more clearly defined. This was a team effort that, thanks to a sharing of intent on the part of all the social partners, has ensured the achievement of a prestigious result that, at this point, is really very close.
