The road to Unesco - Spring Summer 2016

wednesday 20th April 2016

In 2016 the area that encompasses the 15 municipalities around Conegliano, Vittorio Veneto and Valdobbiadene is the 2016 European City of Wine. This is the first time that a whole area, and not just a single city, has been recognised at European level as a single production area. The area comprises the following towns: Conegliano, Susegana, San Vendemiano, Colle Umberto, Vittorio Veneto, Tarzo, Cison di Valmarino, Follina, Miane, San Pietro di Feletto, Refrontolo, Pieve di Soligo, Farra di Soligo, Vidor and Valdobbiadene.

This territory, the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG production area, enjoys much acclaim at both national and European level, which is surely due to the deep rooted history and tradition which has contributed to the high quality and maturity of the products. From the School of Oenology and the Prosecco wine road of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene hills (both the oldest in Italy), to the University and the experimental research centre for a large portfolio of companies that export all over the world, to the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG consortium, everything has led to a fully integrated development with the territory itself.

One cannot emphasise enough the unmistakable pull of the landscape and its features, so richly depicted by some of the greatest masters of Renaissance painting, including Cima da Conegliano. Indeed, the area is currently under consideration for UNESCO World Heritage Site status, a recognition expected to be confirmed in the near future and which will allow us to showcase all that the Conegliano Valdobbiadene area has to offer in culture, events, sports and recreation. On the one hand this recognition will enable us to highlight the countless opportunities that welcome visitors to the area, and on the other it allows us to present for the first time a territory that brings together extraordinary and wonderful talents and values, not only in the eyes of those who live here but for the increasing numbers of visitors and tourists, who we are always so happy to meet.
